Odilon Redon is a French pastellist born in April 20 1840. His works often represent his internal feelings and thoughts. He himself wanted to "place the visible at the service of the invisible"; thus, although his work seems filled with strange beings and grotesque dichotomies, his aim was to represent pictorially the ghosts of his own mind.Redon believed that art cannot be analyzed or subject to systems, but required three fundamentals: tradition, or the “the entire thinking and life of humanity”; nature “outside of which our ambition to create remains a state of dream”; and personal invention, “the intuition that combines and summaries everything”. The implication is that the artist must embrace the past, while admitting that nature only manifests as an illusion which human imagination exploits to create art.

Why i like this artist: His works tend to have melancholy shown in it in spite of the glorious colours. This melancholy appears to have been a constant foil to the optimistic and joyful outpourings. To understand the works of Odilon Redon, surrendering to the possibilities of the image by a kind of meditative fusion with the work is required to realize its potential meanings.
Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix ( 26 April 1798 – 13 August 1863) was a French Romantic artist regarded from the outset of his career as the leader of the French Romantic school.Delacroix had first captured this subject--Chiron, the wisest of all centaurs, training Achilles in the art of hunting--on a corner of a curved ceiling devoted to poetry in Paris's Palais Bourbon Library, which he decorated from 1838 to 1847. On visits to Delacroix's studio twenty years later, Sand admired the new, rectangular painting of the subject the artist was working on. That canvas was promised to another admirer, so Delacroix made this nearly identical pastel for her and wrote to Sand's son, Maurice, informing him of the gift.
This work is interesting because this painting is not just a painting but there are notes and testament about Achilles who is a Greek mythology. I like this work because you can see the distance of the background and the subject that Eugene wants his viewer to look at.
